Useful information for your arrival in Canada
After government services, basic services are important. For example: obtain a SIM card, obtain an OPUS card, obtain a driver’s licence.
SIM card:
To get a SIM card, there are different companies that offer SIM cards, and you can also buy cell phones from these companies in installments.
To receive a SIM card, bring the following documents:
- Passport
- Work permit / Study permit
- Visa
- Other IDs (if available)
OPUS Card:
Montreal’s transportation system is called STM, which stands for Société de transport de Montréal.
To use the bus and metro in Montreal, you need an Opus card
You must reload the OPUS card monthly and on the first day of each month. There are different tariffs, but if you regularly use the metro and bus, it is better to charge on a monthly basis.
The monthly fee for ordinary people is $90.50, which allows you to use this card multiple times indefinitely. Keep in mind that these charges are only for the island of Montreal and you will need to pay separate charges for the islands of Montreal such as Laval, Longueuil and Brossard.
The monthly fee for students is $52, which you can use multiple times indefinitely. To receive this card, you must bring the relevant letter from your place of study and then go to the BERRI – UQAM metro station. Get an OPUS photo card at this centre. This card is valid for one year and you must visit this center every year before the card expires and receive a new card.
OPUS card recharge location:
The OPUS card can be recharged at all métro stations. There are ATMs in metro stations that you can use to reload your OPUS card or ask the cashier at the station to reload you.
