Driving license:
If you live in Canada and want to drive a motor vehicle, you must have a valid Canadian driver’s license and have it with you while driving. The driver’s license is valid for three years and usually expires on your birthday after this period. You must apply for a new license before the expiration date.
How to Get a Canadian Driver’s License
It depends on whether:
You have a valid driver’s license from other provinces or regions or other countries.
You do not already have a driver’s license or you do not currently have a valid driver’s license.
If you have a valid foreign driver’s license, you can apply for a Canadian driver’s license and obtain a driver’s license by passing the knowledge exam and road test. Therefore, you must translate your driver’s license and have it approved by the Ministry of Justice and Foreign Affairs, and you must have the original and translation with you. It is better to get the transcript of the certificate violation (in the executive section of the test town) and translate it, because in some provinces you can use it as a discount on car insurance.
Driving license in Quebec:
In the province of Quebec, the traffic police department is called SAAQ, and by visiting the website or contacting them directly, you can apply the necessary information, such as making an appointment to check the regulations or the city.
Official website: https://saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/
Phone number: 7620- 361-800-001
If you have valid driver’s license from other countries:
In this case, you do not need to take the classes. If you have the required documents, you can call the traffic police of your city and make an appointment to open the file.
When you go to the office of the traffic police with the required documents, after opening your file, if there is still time until the end of the day, you will be asked if you want to take the knowledge exam today?
If you are ready for the exam, you can take the exam on the same day. If you pass the exam on the same day, you must call this organization and book the road test.
If you fail any of the exams, you have to wait 28 days and then take the exam time and try again.
Required Documents:
- Provide a lease
- Passport or travel document with your photo on it.
- Immigration documents that are valid for more than 6 months, such as work permit and study permit
- 2 bills such as electricity bill or internet bill
- A valid driver’s license from your previous country of residence with an official and certified translation.
Note that the translation of your certificate must be the official translation of Quebec.
Important Note: In Canada, a driver’s license is recognized as an identity document, and even if you do not want to drive, it is recommended that you obtain a driver’s license. In many offices and daily activities, you need an identity card, and until you receive permanent residency, you will not have any Canadian identity documents. To facilitate work and not have a passport with you, it is better to get your driver’s license.
